“Stadium”, last performance and the first full length production for the 2009 season

The iKapa Dance Theatre first full length production for the 2009 season, the Stadium, choreographed by South African Andile Sotiya, is an innovative dance, the acclaimed avante garde production. The Stadium, being performed previously in London and Leeds in 2003, promises to engage audiences through its experimental deconstruction of the status quo definitions of society and art.

The production uses the cultural complexity of stadiums as urban, creative spaces to re-evaluate the dominance of high-art in a world that’s increasingly being characterized by the triumph of the popular. The choreography revolves around games, issues and athletic dancing; breaking down the barriers that inhibit us to play with the pieces of our urban existence. This, according to Andile, is especially relevant in South Africa, where stadiums are used for cultural events as diverse as concerts, political rallies, sports games and even funerals.

The Stadium is the perfect platform for this young, energetic company to further their aim of reinvigorating classical dance in South Africa. The production exhibits the perfect fusion of ground breaking choreography and exceptional artistry.
