STAGES

27 November 2011 at 18h00

at the Magnet Theatre, Corner Lower Main and St Michaels Road, Observatory.

Tickets from admin@ikapadancetheatre.co.za R60 advance, R80 on the door.

iKapa Dance will also perform STAGES at JL Zwane in Gugulethu, free of charge, on 26 November 2011 at 18h00.

STAGES is an explosive production that will resonate with every dance-lover in the audience, no matter what stage of life or dance they may find themselves in.

STAGES is a reflection of the phases of a dancer’s life. In childhood, we learn that dance is an outlet of self expression and pure joy. In youth, we begin to experience the thrill of shining as a dancer, the hunger and chase of the spot light and the position of center stage. In adulthood, all of life can be expressed through our bodies and their perfection – the long lines and exhilarating jumps and lifts and the ability to express and share life’s darkest and brightest moments with an audience. And throughout life, there are those who have danced only in their hearts and are taking bold steps onto the stage for the first time, knowing that it’s never too late to be a dancer.

In 2011, iKapa Dance has grown to encompass four main groups of dancers, all of which are featured in STAGES. These include the Professional Company, which strives for technical excellence of an international standard; the Youth Dance Theatre aimed at growing today’s young talent into the bright performing stars of tomorrow; the Training and Outreach School which gives previously disadvantaged children in Cape Town communities the opportunity to dance and learn new life skills; and the OnPointe Dance Studio which makes contemporary dance accessible to anyone who has ever had the ambition to dance and feel the joy and beauty of movement.

The Dance Training and Outreach School will stage five pieces of which one is a collaboration piece between the outreach school and the Youth Dance Theatre. The award-winning collaboration piece is called I Am Here choreographed by Mbulelo Ngumbombini.

The Youth Dance Theatre will stage Checkmate choreographed by Simoné Botha, as well as Mbulelo Ngumbombini’s Cater for Three.

iKapa’s On Pointe Performance Team will perform Beautiful Mess, choreographed by Theo Ndindwa. Dancers of the evening school are extremely excited to perform as it will be the first time for many of them to ever set foot on a stage.

The Professional company will bring two pieces to the stage. They are Navras, back by popular demand and choreographed by iKapa’s directors, Theo Ndindwa and Tanya Arshamian, and Maxwell Xolani Rani’s African piece, Forgiveness.

We look forward to celebrating and sharing dance with you in unforgettable production.

Dear Supporters and Friends of iKapa Dance
Well it might be winter and it might be cold, but members, dancers and children of iKapa Dance Theatre have not had time to feel it- they have all been too busy running around from one project to the next!

Company News

It has been an energetic and exciting year for iKapa Dance Theatre so far. Even though our funding situation unfortunately required us to release our company dancers from their full-time contracts, the company and selected children from the Outreach still completed two productions. Firstly, On Broadway with guest performances from Jazzart Dance Theatre and UK’s Company Chameleon and secondly, the company presented the energetic and emotional production of FUSE at the Artscape Arena Theatre. FUSE was then shown again at the main platform of the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and, though it was ridiculously cold, it was a great success and the company received a great review from the Q magazine.

Training and Outreach News

Whilst July kept the company busy in Grahamstown, the Outreach children were busy rehearsing for the debut performance of “I Am Here” choreographed by Mbulelo Ngubombini. They performed “I Am Here” at Artscape as a part of Jazzarts’ Danscape season for which they completed four performances.  The children were fantastic and it was an eye-opening experience for them through the interaction with other dance schools and teachers- but there was no rest for them.  On 12-14 July they attended a four day camp in Stellenbosch, hosted by the Department of Culture Affairs and Sport, where they received intensive workshops in multiple art forms, including dance presented by iKapa Dance Theatre.  The term commenced again on 18 July and they quickly got back into a steady routine of classes three times a week.  In August the Training & Outreach learners performed “I am here” at the Artscape Schools festival along with the Youth Company who presented “Checkmate” by Simone Botha.  ”I am here” was selected to perform at the GALA evening on 26 August where they were awarded a trophy for their work! We are very proud of them and their development.

iKapa Directors like to share the opportunities available and therefore selected some of its newest members to participate in GUGSWORX on 27 August. This all day arts workshop and exhibition was provided by five arts organisations who collaborated in the establishment and implementation of this new initiative; partners included iKapa Dance Theatre, FTHK, Remix, Baxter, PANSA and was supported by Cultural Development Trust.
A Word on Funding…
iKapa Dance Theatre is delighted to welcome new supporters to the team; National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and the Emthunzini BBBEE Community Trust have recently approved funds for the iKapa Youth Dance Development Project. In addition to this, iKapa is grateful to the Grandwest Heritage Fund for supporting our work for a second year. iKapa Dance Theatre is truly grateful to all of its funders and we acknowledge that we would not be able to continue or develop the work we do without their support, these currently include Distell, Investec, BOE, ACT, Education without Borders, BASA, Travel Bags.  iKapa is very excited about the future, the implementation of its wonderful plans and look forward to seeing the growth of youth dance development and the arts and culture sectors of South Africa.

Looking Forward

If you have missed recent performances watch out for iKapa Training & Outreach and Youth Company  who will perform ‘I am here’ along with”Checkmate” at the Baxter Dance Fringe Festival and Main Festival in October.

A fundraiser for iKapa Dance Theatre will be hosted on 2 October, featuring the OnPointe Dance Studio performance group, the Youth Company and dancers from the Training & Outreach School, so watch this space for further information.
The entire company will be moving into its new premises in October and the Directors are looking to start the development of a dedicated Arts & Culture Youth Development Centre in Samora.

The Directors are off to the Kinani Contemporary Dance Platform in Maputo, Mozambique in November and, at the same time, will start creating their new season to be toured in 2012. We have big plans for the coming year, so stay tuned and keep supporting iKapa Dance Theatre!

On another note if you wish to join the iKapa Dance Theatre team, the organization is currently searching for an Administration & financial Manager as well as four Professional Dancers and four Apprentice Dancers
